The name Brahmi already gives an idea of the importance that Ayurveda attaches to the small, moisture-loving plant. Brahmi is Sanskrit and is derived from Brahma, the creative force in the universe. The ending "i" refers to the female half of the god Brahma. In Indian mythology, Brahmi refers to the attainment of an expanded state of consciousness in the here and now. In Buddhism, it is called Jhana. In addition to Brahmi, there are other names for Bacopa monnieri in the ancient texts. Sureshta, which translates as "loved by the gods". Sarasvati, the name of the goddess of wisdom and learning and Medhya, which translates as "clever", "wise". The name Brahmi is not always clear. Both the Bacopa monnieri offered here and Centella asiatica, Gotu Kola, are referred to as Brahmi. Centella asiatica serves as a substitute for Bacopa monnieri due to its similar effects. Bacopa monnieri is often offered in the markets as "jal brahmi". This could be translated as "Brahmi grows by the water". The distinction is also not always clear in the old texts. Accordingly, it is debatable whether the two plants are interchangeable. But if you look more closely, major differences become apparent. Gotu Kola is sweet and heavy in quality. Bacopa monnieri is cold and bitter in quality. From an Ayurvedic perspective, both plants are used differently. Even though both plants are broadly similar in effect. Gotu kola is referred to as the weaker Brahmi.
