In Bhava Prakasha, a standard work on Ayurveda from the 16th century, Shatavari, Asparagus racemosus, is listed among the Oshadhis* in Fers form. In it, the author, Bhava Mishra, distinguishes the small Shatavar, which he calls Shatavari, from the large Shatavar, which he lists as Mahashatavari. Maha means "large" in both Sanskrit and Hindi. The two are distinguished in terms of their effect. A distinction that is rarely found today. The translation of the name already gives an idea of the importance of Shatavari in Ayurveda. Shata means "hundred". "var" is usually translated as bridegroom. Shatavari would therefore loosely translate as "who has 100 husbands". It is very likely that this free translation alludes to the primary effect attributed to Shatavari. But in Sanskrit, the word "vara" not only means bridegroom, but also "blessing". If you take into account the appreciation that Shatavari is given, the translation "hundredfold blessing" is much more appropriate for this plant. * "Oshadhi" refers to the plants that have an Ayurvedic effect. Literally translated, Oshadhi means "what removes the pain".
