In Hindu mythology, Tulsi is the embodiment of the god Vishnu. Just touching the medium-sized shrub from the Lamiaceae family is said to cleanse the body. Tulsi is often placed in Hindu temples because it is believed to intimidate Yama, the god of death. Accordingly, Tulsi is offered to Lord Krishna to protect against death, illness and misfortune.
After this introduction, it is certainly not surprising that Tulsi is the holiest plant in Hinduism. The annual plant, with its small, dark red lip flowers, can be found in many Indian monasteries and gardens. It will not surprise you that Tulsi occupies a central position in Ayurveda. Tulsi is one of the adaptogens in Ayurveda. The leaves, seeds, flowers and roots are used. However, the Tulsi leaves are of greatest importance. But the leaves are not only popular in Ayurveda. In South India, men chew fresh Tulsi leaves to free themselves from the addiction to betel bites. Betel bites are a mixture of betel nuts, slaked lime and spices rolled up in betel pepper leaves. Betel has a stimulating effect and turns the mouth red. The lime damages gums and teeth in the long term. This is why people in the upper classes are increasingly avoiding betel and trying to wean themselves off it with tulsi leaves. However, fresh tulsi leaves also discolor the teeth if they are chewed regularly. In Ayurveda, the pressed juice or tulsi powder (tulsi churna) is usually used. When buying, you should make sure that the leaf powder has been tested for heavy metals. In the recent past, tulsi has attracted attention due to mercury contamination.
We offer you our tulsi powder in highly pure, laboratory-tested organic quality and conventional tulsi leaf tea. Since tulsi is an annual, you can also grow the perennial at home. It prefers a sunny spot with moist, permeable soil.
Tulsi should not be taken during pregnancy.
